Some Reasons Why Your Kitty Won’t Use Their Kitty Litter Box

Cats do not always use their litter box, which leaves cat owners wondering why. Here are some easy ways to solve your problem.

Check to make sure the litter box is located in a quiet place in your home for your cat to have privacy. It works out best to have the litter box in the basement with the door slightly opened to allow easy access giving your cat privacy and keeping the odors to a minimal. Some use a closet but if you do this be sure and keep the box clean to reduce odors in such a confined space and don’t forget to leave the door open!

You may want to place the litter box under a table out of sight if the floor is tile you should avoid placing it on carpet since it is very hard to eliminate urine smell in carpet. Ask yourself if you changed the litter box in any way. Have you moved the litter box to be located in a more open space lately? When is the last time you cleaned the litter box?

Have you recently purchased new bag of litter with a heavy scent cats will use unscented litter that clumps more. Get to know your cat’s preferences and look to see if the depth of the litter box changed in any way some cats like to have their litter deep while other cats prefer shallow litter. As you cat grows it will need to get a larger litter box. If you own an older cat make sure the litter box is easy to enter and exit. Separating your cat’s food and water dish from the litter box is a must they will not want to eat if located close by the litter box. If your cat has picked out a particular room to soil try closing the door to that room if you can or cover the target area with furniture. You may want to put their food dish in the target area since cats do not like to eat where they go to the bathroom.

Always take your cat to a Vet on a regular schedule. If you have more than one cat get each one of them their own litter box. If you have moved lately your cat will be able to sense where the former owner’s cat would urinate. Do not disturb your cat when it is going to the bathroom.

It will take anywhere from 3 to 8 weeks for a cat to get adjusted to new surroundings it is best to have patience. Whenever there is a sudden change in your family members either an addition to the family such as a new baby or a loss to the family due to a death your cat will need time to adjust to the change in their environment too. If at all possible gradually make major lifestyle changes in your life to avoid confusing your cat’s daily routine schedule and causing problems when your cat attempts to accept the changes.

Never punish your cat by hitting them screaming at them or chasing them or even rubbing their nose in their own urine will not phase them since the smell does not bother their noses. Punishing a cat for urinating after the fact is useless as they are unable to determine right from wrong and by doing so will only escalate the urine problem in the future. Naturally cats are exceptionally clean and are aware of where they are going. Remember the best way for you to help your cat to overcome any stress or anxiety is by giving them love and showing you care for them in a loving way.
