Tutoring Homework Philosophy

Tutoring homework is an important part of consolidating the learning and studying that goes on when someone meets with their tutor. A tutor who does not assigned homework is missing the point of their role in tutoring someone and the progress that their students make. Instead, a tutoring system should be established between the tutor and the student on how homework will be assigned and highlighting the advantages that come with the regular completion of homework.

Tutoring homework is of course given to students by their tutor after their regular session together. This time together is still an important part of the tutor and student relationship and without it any homework done will not be as effective. The tutor will be able to check on the accuracy of the homework and give advice on any corrections that need to be made. The tutor can also make adjustments to the tutorials and to subsequent assignments of homework based on how the student is progressing with their current assignments.

The second part of doing extra studies is being assigned homework by the tutor. While just spending time with a private tutor is likely to be helpful in improving a student’s overall scholastic abilities, supplementing that time with regular homework is important to keep the understanding strong and increase the value of hiring the tutor. Homework should be assigned that will allow students to practice whatever was covered in the tutoring sessions and to help deepen their understanding of whatever particular topic or technique they are studying.

The main purpose of tutor assigned homework is, of course, to strengthen the student’s understanding of the material being studied. Ideally, the homework assigned should be manageable and very focused on what the tutor is teaching. This is additional homework to whatever the student is also receiving in their standard schooling, so it cannot be excessive or little learning and retention will take place. The homework should also be very specific to what is being studied so that the student is able to completely learn the material and retain the information beyond a couple of days.

Parents who hire tutors for their children should encourage the use of tutoring homework to build on the information provided in tutoring sessions, and to help their children retain the information for a long period of time. They should also ensure that the homework is assigned at a reasonable rate and that the tasks are not only related to the studies but are useful for improving their child’s academic performance. To get the most value out of hiring a tutor, parents should be active participants in their children’s studies.
