WIne Selection - A Beginners Guide

One of the most asked questions by consumers within the wine industry has to do with wine selection. What kind of wine would I like? Is this particular wine good? What sort of price range should I be looking for to find a good wine? Should I buy wine from online wine sites?

Wine selection primarily comes down to personal choice. But how would I know what’s good? There are many ways to try wines without physically purchasing them first. Many wine retailers will sometimes have wines that you can try in store. Generally a wine company will run these types of promotions to help sell their product.

Don’t think that you shouldn’t indulge in these free offerings, by all means, indulge. Good value can sometimes be gained from these promotional offerings as they are usually accompanied with a sale of some sort.

Visiting wineries is another great way to try a variety of wines. Some wineries are introducing a “tasting fee” which is mostly waived if wine is purchased. Different options are available to you if you wish to visit wineries. If you have knowledge of a particular winery region, you can plan the trip yourself. You can also use the internet to gather information about a particular region.

If you’re planning a trip yourself, information can also be gathered from the wineries you visit as they will have a lot of knowledge about the area. If you’re not confident organising one yourself, you can always pay to go on an organised trip. Many companies are available to do these trips, especially in the larger regions.

There’s two great ways to try lots of different wines from different wineries all in the one location. One option is to join a wine club. Many wine clubs have tasting parties at different times of the year which are sometimes sponsored by wine organisations.

If you have an idea what you generally like, online wine website can be great. Otherwise, read what they have to say. Many online wine sales sites have different wine clubs or mixed dozens which will allow you to gain knowledge of certain regions and varieties within that region.

In the end, your personal choice is the one that matters. Nobody should ever tell you what you should like, but rather help in what you might like.

Wine can be a great shared experience, but above all else, an enjoyable personal experience.
